Due to its location advantage, Madhya Pradesh is one of the major states which are looked upon by aspiring students for higher education. Department of Higher Education regulates the educational matters of the state in all aspects except for studies in engineering, medical, veterinary and agriculture.
The literacy census of 2011 has proved the literacy rate in Madhya Pradesh is 70.60% with male literacy at a figure more than 76% in comparison to female at more than 50%. However the major achievement of the state is the active participation of the Muslim women in Madhya Pradesh which is 60.1% greater than all other North Indian states. Higher education is an important part of the overall development of a state and this fact is recognized by the Government and that is why together with private bodies there is more than 500 colleges in various disciplines operating in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

There are a number of specialized courses available in Madhya Pradesh along with the general degree and diploma courses. Few of the popular educational programs are Architecture, Ayurveda, Management, Engineering, Biotechnology and Physiotherapy. Other professional courses include studies in Pharmacy, Hotel Management, Media Studies, Journalism, Hospitality Management, Medicine, Nursing and others. The general courses include degree courses in arts, science and commerce stream of studies.

In Madhya Pradesh there are several Universities and each has their own schedule of entrance examinations, criteria and eligibility for their specialized courses. Few national level examination results are also taken into count. Few state examinations like Pre Engineering Test conducted by Professional Examination Board (PEB) Bhopal determines the admission to engineering colleges.
